“Our Ozone Layer Is Having A hard Time Healing”

“Here’s Why”

Four new man-made, ozone-destroying chemicals have been discovered in the upper atmosphere, and appear to be slowing the recovery of the ozone hole, according to a new report.

In 2010 there was a total ban on CFCs but certain loopholes still exist in the Montreal Protocol that allow small amounts of the chemicals to still be used in the production of certain types of products including some insecticides and solvents that are used to clean electronic equipment.

Researchers based at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom have been able to calculate that these loopholes which were previously thought to be relatively insignificant at first have actually allowed more than 74,000 metric tons of three previously unknown CFCs and one other related compound that is known as an HCFC to also be released into our atmosphere. The emissions of two of the compounds appear to have accelerated in recent years which scientist say could result in a more serious degradation of our ozone layer within the next few decade. Researchers compared  these new compounds in modern air samples with the nearly century-old air samples trapped in old compacted snow samples from Greenland. The team did not detect any of the four new compounds in any snow samples from before the 1960s which suggests that the compounds were man-made and entered our atmosphere from the 60’s on.
